| inductive | using particular examples to reach a general conclusion about something or leading on |
| deductive | using logic or reason to form a conclusion or opinion about something |
| syllogism | a formal argument in logic that is formed by two statements and a conclusion which must be true if the two statements are true |
| premise | a statement or idea that is accepted as being true and that is used as the basis of an argument |
| ethos | the distinguishing character, sentiment, moral nature, or guiding beliefs of a person, group, or institution; |
| pathos | an element in experience or in artistic representation evoking pity or compassion |
| logos | the divine wisdom manifest in the creation, government, and redemption of the world and often identified with the second person of the Trinity |
| emotional appeals | goes with pathos, goes with emotions like fear |
| transfer | to convey from one person, place, or situation to another : move, shift |
| bandwagon appeal | join or give support to a group/movement that seems to be assure to success |
| ellipsis dots | omissions of parts of a word or sentence |
| fallacy | a wrong belief : a false or mistaken idea |
| non sequitur | a statement that is not connected in a logical or clear way to anything said before it |
| connotation | an idea or quality that a word makes you think about in addition to its meaning |
| denotation | a direct specific meaning as distinct from an implied or associated idea; literal meaning |
| misleading quotations | taking words out of other peoples mouths and changing what they said |
| ad hominem | marked by or being an attack on an opponent's character rather than by an answer to the contentions made |
| red herring | something that distracts attention from the real issue |
| straw man | a weak or imaginary argument or opponent that is set up to be easily defeated |
