Some of the new words that we have learned when using a commercial pattern.

| What is the warp? | The warp is the yarns that run the length of the fabric. |
| Name a property of warp yarns. | They are strong. |
| What is the weft? | This is the yarns that are woven across the warp yarn. They go over and under the warp yarn |
| What is the bias? | This is the diagonal direction of the fabric. |
| What is a feature of the bias? | It stretches. |
| What is the selvedge edge? | This is the edge along the length of the fabric that doesn't fray. |
| Why doesn't the selvedge edge fray? | Because the weft threads loop around it. |
| What is the straight grain? | This is the direction of the fabric that runs along the warp parallel to the selvedge edge. |
| What is meant by the term 'modifying a pattern'. | This means changing the pattern in some way to suit your needs. |
| What is the pattern layout? | This is the way you arrange your pattern pieces on your fabric. |
| Describe the pattern symbol that tells you to 'place on the straight grain' | A line with an arrow at each end. |
| What is the meaning of the term 'CADCAM'? | This means 'Computer Aided Design, Computer Aided Manufacture |
| Name a piece of CADCAM machinery that we have in class. | The digital embroidery machines. |
| How do we lengthen a pattern piece? | We look for the parallel lengthen and shorten lines and we cut between them to stretch the pattern. |
| What is the meaning of 'seam allowance'? | This is how much is allowed for the width of your seams. |
| What do we use interfacing for? | This is used to strengthen and stabilise. |
| Where might you find interfacing on your school uniform? | Behind the embroidered badge on your jumper? |
| Why is there interfacing behind the embroidered badge on your jumper? | To stop the fabric stretching while the badge is being embroidered. |
| What is another name for fabric scissors? | Fabric shears. |
| What do we mean by the term 'neaten'? | We neaten seams to stop them from fraying and deteriorating. |
