Algebraic Connections Chapter 6 Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Variables Letters used to represent a number.
Algebraic expression A combination of variables and numbers using the operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, as well as powers or roots.
Evaluate Find the value of an expression.
Terms The parts of an expression that are separated by addition/subtraction.
Coefficient The numerical part of a term.
Like terms Terms that have the same variables with the same exponents on the variables.
Simplified When parentheses have been removed and all like terms have been combined.
Equation Two algebraic expressions joined by an equal sign.
Solving an equation The process of finding the set of numbers that will make the equation a true statement.
Solution The numbers that make an equation true.
Ratio Comparing quantities by division.
Proportion A statement that says that two ratios are equal.
Direct variation As one quantity increase, the other increases.
Indirect variation As one quantity increase, the other decreases.
Quadratic equation An equation in the form of ax^2 + bx + c = 0
Binomial A simplified algebraic expression that contains two terms in which the variables have whole number exponents.
Trinomial A simplified algebraic expression that contain three terms in which the variables have whole number exponents.
Zero-Product property If the product of two factors is zero, then at least one of the factors must be zero.
Quadratic formula A formula that allows you to find solutions to any quadratic equation.
