perm wave

TermDefinition
Permanent waving is a two step process whereby the hair undergoes a physical change caused by wrapping the hair on perm rods then the hair goes through a chemical change when putting the waving lotion.
Amino acids are compounds made up of carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen and sulfur.
peptide bonds also known as end bonds are chemical bonds that join amino acids together, end to end in long chans to form polypeptide chain.
polypeptide chains long chains of amino acids joined together by peptide bonds.
keratin proteins are long coiled polypeptide chains.
side bonds are disulfide, salt, and hydrogen bonds that cross-link polypeptide chains together.
disulfide bonds are strong chemical side bonds formed when the sulfur atoms in two adjacient protein chains together. not broken by water or thermal styling.
Salt bonds weak physical side bonds that are a result of an attraction between negative and positvie electircal charges. easily broken by change in pH.they reform when the pH is turned back to normal.
hydrogen bonds weak physical side bonds that are a result in attraction of opposite electrical charges. easily broken by water or heat they reform when hair dries or cools.
concave rods they have the smaller diameter in the center that increases to a larger diameter on the ends.
base section subsections of panels into the hair is divided for perm.
thioglycolic acid a colorless liquid with a strong, unpleasent odor, most common reducing agent in permanent wave solution.
ammonium thioglycolate (atg) alkaline and is the active ingredient or reducing agent in alkaline permanents.
alkaline waves also known as cold waves, were developed in 1941.have a pH between 9.0 and 9.6 use ammonium thioglycolate as a reducing agent.
glyceryl monothioglycolate (GMTG) main active ingredient in true acid and acid-balanced waving lotion. it has a low pH.
true acid waves have a pH between 4.5 and 7.0 and require heat to process; they process more slowly
acid-balanced waves have a pH between 7.8 and 8.2
ammonium thioglycolate the main active ingredient or reducing agent in alkaline perms
Glycerol monothioglycolate main active ingredient in acid-balanced waving lotions
porosity the degree to which hair absorbs the waving lotion is related to
expand the hair the action of waving lotion
little or no elasticity if hair breaks under very slight strain
double tool technique a method of wrapping a permanent wave that is suitable for very long hair is
amino acids keratin proteins are made of long chains of _______ linked together end to end like beads
diameter hair texture describes the _______ of a single strand of hair and is classified as fine, medium, or coarse
acid-balanced waves that process more quickly and produce firmer curls than true acid waves are considered to be ______
exothermic the perm that is activivated by heat created chemically within the product is known _____
peptide bonds polypeptide chains are long chains of amino acids joined together by_____
endothermic a perm activated by an outside heat source, usually a conventional hood dryer
disulfide bonds that are formed when the sulfur atoms in two adjacent polypeptide chains are joined together are ______
waving lotion the chemical action of ______ breaks the disulfide bonds and softens the hair
chemically when hair has assumed the disired shape, the broken disulfide bonds must be ________ rebonded.
diameter straight rods are equal in ______
concave ______ rods have a small diameter in the center area and gradually increase to their largest diameter at the ends resulting in a tighter curl at the hair ends with a loose wider curl at the scalp.
fine texture what type of hair is more fragile, easier to process and more susceptible to damage from perm services ?
coarse texture what type of hair requires more processing than medium or fine hair and may also be more resistant to processing
