Banana republic A tropical country whose economics are dependent on production and export of fruit. Guatemala is a banana republic.
Luminous adj. Something that produces light. The marble appeared luminous as it was held in the sunlight.
Flax n. Any plant that produces linen. The shirt was made from a flax plant.
Pompadour n. Type of man’s hairstyle, brushed up high from the forehead. The man put his hair in a pompadour before he went out.
Lechery n. unrestrained, lude or lustful behavior. Jim’s lechery toward the young woman was disturbing.
Chagrin n. Feeling of annoyance, or vexation, marked by humiliation or disappointment. To her chagrin, the party ended just as she arrived.
Wan adj. Physical weakness. The girl was looking wan and sickly after a week with the flu.
Ingratitude n. Lack of gratefulness, poor return for kindness received. She showed ingratitude to her friend who had just shared a lengthy study guide.
Indignant adj. Anger about something considered unfair. The boy was indignant about the hard test because he believed the teacher was expecting too much.
Amiable adj. Friendly. The amiable child gave flowers to the old lady.
Placate v. To please or pacify. The police attempted to placate the angry crowd at the riot.
