| backstage | the area behind the scenery not visible to the audience |
| counter-cross | moving in the opposite direction and out of the way of another actor who is moving across the stage |
| cross | an actor's move from one side of the stage to another |
| downstage | area of the stage closet to the audience |
| upstage | area of the stage farthest from the audience |
| full back/full front | facing completely away from or completely toward the audience |
| profile | facing sideways to the audience so that they only see one side of your body |
| quarter turn | 90 degree turn |
| raked stage | a slanted stage, where upstage is slightly higher than downstage |
| sightlines | imaginary lines indicating visibility of stage areas from different areas of the house |
| stage left/ stage right | left and right side of the stage from the actors perspective |
| three quarter turn | 270 degree turn |
| green room | room where actors can lounge before performances |
| "Get on the line" | meeting with another actor to have a conversation instead of talking upstage to downstage (parallel to first seat on the last row) |
| cheating out | playing a bit toward the audience while conversing with others on stage |
| gestures | movements of separate parts of the body such as waving an arm or shrugging a shoulder |
| muscular memory | when you know the role so well that your actions become effortless and appear completely natural |
| offstage | any part of the stage that the audience cannot see |
| onstage | any part of the stage that is visible to the audience |
| scenario | an outline of a play |
| stage business | detailed bits of action such as knitting, setting the table, etc., as distinguished form broad stage movement |
| upstaging | drawing the audience's attention to yourself when it should be focused on another character |
| audible | able to be heard |
| circumflex | combo of expressing sarcasm, doubt, and innuendos |
| diaphragm | muscle below the rib cage that helps sustain air |
| inflection | variety of vocal pitch |
| larynx | the part of the throat that contains the vocal chords |
| pitch | relative highness or lowness of a voice (tone) |
| project | to increase voice or actions so they will carry to the audience (volume) |
| rate | the speed at which one speaks |
| resonance | a rich, warm vocal tone |
| volume | relative loudness of a voice |
| diction/articulation | clear pronunciation |
| emoting | expressing emotions |
| ensemble work | becoming part of a whole |
| fall | break character |
| going up | forgetting one's lines during a rehearsal or performance |
| illusion of the first time | actor's ability to perform in a show over and over while making it appear that the dialogue and situations are happening for the first time |
| interplay | interaction between characters |
| step on | to cut off or interrupt another character by speaking over his or her lines |
| supporting roles | roles that support a leading role |
