| deck | a structure of planks or plates, approximately horizontal, extending across a ship or boat at any of various levels |
| pier | a structure leading out from the shore into a body of water, in particular. |
| cable (rope) | a thick rope of wire or nonmetallic fiber, typically used for construction, mooring ships, and towing vehicles. |
| column (pillar) | an upright pillar, typically cylindrical and made of stone or concrete, supporting an entablature, arch, or other structure or standing alone as a monument. |
| truss | a framework, typically consisting of rafters, posts, and struts, supporting a roof, bridge, or other structure. |
| plate girder | In a plate girder bridge, the plate girders are typically I-beams made up from separate structural steel plates |
| abutment | a structure built to support the lateral pressure of an arch or span, e.g., at the ends of a bridge. |
| mortise | a hole or recess cut into a part, designed to receive a corresponding projection (a tenon) on another part so as to join or lock the parts together. |
| tenon | a projecting piece of wood made for insertion into a mortise in another piece. |
| trestle | a framework consisting of a horizontal beam supported by two pairs of sloping legs, used in pairs to support a flat surface such as a tabletop. |
| cross bracing | In construction, cross bracing is a system utilized to reinforce building structures in which diagonal supports intersect. |
| diagonal | (of a straight line) joining two opposite corners of a square, rectangle, or other straight-sided shape. |
| congruent | (of figures) identical in form; coinciding exactly when superimposed. |
| obtuse angle | obtuse angle is more than 90 degrees but less then 180 degrees. |
| parallel line | Lines are parallel if they are always the same distance apart (called "equidistant"), and will never meet. |
| perpendicular line | The segment AB is perpendicular to the segment CD because the two angles it creates (indicated in orange and blue) are each 90 degrees. |
| right angle | an angle of 90°, as in a corner of a square or at the intersection of two perpendicular straight lines. |
| trapezoid | a quadrilateral with only one pair of parallel sides. |
| beam | a long, sturdy piece of squared timber or metal spanning an opening or part of a building, usually to support the roof or floor above. |
