Multimodal language key terms

| Repairs | altering a previous comment or misspelling |
| Sociolect | variety of speech used by a particular social group |
| Idiolect | Individual’s own style of communicating with particular features |
| dialogic | Turn-taking conversation |
| Fillers Interaction | Nodding or ‘liking’ a comment to show appreciation |
| Multi-modal | written language and graphical representations to incorporate emotion and non-verbal communication |
| Synchronous | The online conversation takes place in real-time with immediate turn-taking. |
| Asynchronous | Delay in responding to communication, often by several hours /days |
| Emoticons | Pictures of faces used to show emotion. They can also be created using punctuation |
| Graphical devices | to indicate non-verbal communication or intonation/emphasis eg repeating vowels 'okaayy' |

| Acronyms | Using the first letters of words eg ROTFLOL |

| Standard English | Agreed UK rules of punctuation and spelling |
| Non-Standard English | Slang or sentence fragments that do not follow the standardised rules |
