English Composition Falacies

Non sequiter Conclusion that does not logically follow the previous statement
Straw man An argument in which one is set up to be defeated
Begging the question Basing a conclusion off of an unproved assumption
False dichotomy (either-or) Limited alternatives are considered
Red herring A misleading clue in an argument
Hasty generalization Not considering all variables
Misleading statistics statistical argument falsehood
Stereotype (sweeping generalization) Applies to a general statement too broadly
Slippery slope An idea that leads to disaster, wrongdoing, or an inappropriate action.
False analogy faulty instance of an argument
Circular reasoning Useless argument, conclusion is a premise
Post hoc, ergo propter hoc "Therefore, because of this" argument
ad hominem arising from emotions, not logic
