Vocabulary Terms

Flashcards for the terms that were provided.

TermDefinition
1.Heat 1.The condition or quality of being hot or warmth.
2. Thermal Energy- 2. generated and measured by heat of any kind. Increased by the velocity of molecules in substances.
3. Macroscopic- 3. visible to the naked eye.
4. Microscopic- 4. so small as to be invisible or indistinct without the use of the microscope.
5. Temperature- 5. a measure of the warmth or coldness of an object or substance with reference to some standard value. The temperature of two systems is the same when the systems are in thermal equilibrium.
6. Thermodynamics- 6. the science concerned with the relations between heat and mechanical energy or work, and the conversion of one into the other.
7. Heat Reservoir 7. a hypothetical body of infinitely large mass capable of absorbing or rejecting unlimited quantities of heat without undergoing appreciable changes in temperature, pressure, or density.
8. Conduction- 8. the transfer of heat between two parts of a stationary system, caused by a temperature difference between the parts.
9. Latent Heat- 9. heat absorbed or radiated during a change of phase at constant temperature and pressure
10. Phase Change- 10. a change from one state (solid or liquid or gas) to another without a change in chemical composition
11. Entropy- 11. a function of thermodynamic variables, as temperature, pressure, or composition, that is a measure of the energy that is not available for work during a thermodynamic process.
12. Radiant Heating- 12. the means of heating objects or persons by radiation in which the intervening air is not heated
13. Thermal Expansion- 13. thermal expansion is the tendency of matter to change in volume in response to a change in temperature.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
