Language Arts Terms

TermDefinition
Context Clues Sources of information in the text that readers may use to predict the identities and meanings of unknown words.
Synonym a word or phrase that means exactly or nearly the same as another word or phrase in the same language
Simile a figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another thing of a different kind, used to make a description more emphatic or vivid
Inference a conclusion reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning.
Theme the lesson learned in a story
Character Trait a specific characteristic that makes a character unique
Cause/Effect cause is the primary action while the effect is the result of that action.
Summarize a brief statement or account of the main points of something.
Authors Point Of View Point of view is the place from which a writer tells the story
Authors Purpose Many authors write to entertain people and make them laugh. Authors also write to persuade or convince their readers to believe in something. Sometimes authors write to inform or teach you about something. author wrote this piece
Mood suggestive of a particular feeling or state of mind
Metaphor figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable.
Foreshadow be a warning or indication of (a future event)
Idiom a group of words established by usage as having a meaning not deducible from those of the individual word.
Climax the most intense, exciting, or important point of the story
