Unit 2

How does a catalyst work? provides an alternative pathway with a lower activation energy.
Enzymes biological catalyst
Advantages of using catalysts lower temperature and pressure, save energy and cost
enzymes for catalysts pure products with no side reactions biodegradable enzymes, non toxic food/drink and washing powders
Why are catalysts important change chemical feedstock into useful products
Why are catalysts good for the environment? lower temperature and pressure, less energy used and less fossil fuels released. Reduce waste and provide a better atom economy
Bad for the environment? do not last forever, need to be disposed of but many contain toxic chemicals or are valuble so need to be recycled.
