| Term | Definition |

| HTML | means the language that "marks up" plain text so that it is formatted and displayed in a Web Browser in interesting and useful ways. |
| Internet | a worldwide collection of computers and computer networks. It is ALWAYS written with a capital "I". |
| network | a collection of two or more computers that are connected to share resources and information. |
| Internet backbone | a collection of high-speed data lines that connect major computer systems located around the world. |
| Internet service probider (ISP) | a company that has a permanent connection to that internet backbone. ISP's utilize high- or medium-speed data lines to allow individuals and companies connect to the backbone for access to the internet. |
| World Wide Web (WWW) | also called the web for short. It is the part of the internet that supports multimedia and consists of a collection of linked documents. |
| hypertext transfer protocols | a set of rules for exchanging text, graphics, sound, video, and other multimedia over a network or the internet |
| web pages | linked documents, or pages of information on the web. |
| web site | a related collection of web pages that is created and maintained by an individual, company, or other organization |
| home page | the main page, or index page, of a web site. It is the first document users see when they access the web site. Has links to the others pages on the web site. |
| web server, (or host) | a computer that stores and sends requested web pages and other files. Every web site is stored on and rus from, one or more web servers. |
| publishing | copying the web pages and associated files, such as graphics and audio, to a web server. |
| intranet | a private network that uses internet technologies to shere company information among employess. |
| extratnet | a private network that uses internet technologies to share business information with select corporate partners, or key customers. |
| web browser | a program that interprets and displays web pages and enables you to view and interact with a web page. |
| uniform resource locator (URL) | th address of a document or other file accessible on the internet. |
| upload | to send from your computer to a sever on the internet, or other storage device. |
| download | to pull from a server on the internet or other storage device, and put onto your computer. |
