Dictator In Rome a dictator is someone appointed to rule for 6 months during a crisis
Republic? type of government where citizens vote for their leaders
Patrician a member of a wealthy family in Ancient rome
What is the story behind the creation of the roman capital city? The king tried to drown his 2 sons for fear they would rise against him, they got away, were raised by a farmer and grew up and killed the king & started the city of rome
What was the name of the two boys? Romulus and Remus
Generally where is Rome located? Central Italy
Who were the first rulers in Rome? Etruscans
What happended to the Etruscans? Romans revolted and drove them from power.
What things in Rome came from the Etruscans? Toga, Alphabet, Roman Gods.
What was a modern medical advancement did the Etruscan start? Dentistry
How was Rome different after the Etruscans were removed? No more Kings, Romans started a republic
How did earlier Roman Senate differ from later Roman senate? Early on only Patrician could hold office (wealth family) later plebeians could be voted into office (ordinary citizens).
What was the job of the Consuls? Like a president, enforced laws and policies.
How long did a Consul rule? 1 year
How many Consuls were there? 2
What if the Consuls disagree? No action could be taken unless they both agree.
What was a Praetor? Junior consul, acted as judges
What lead to many Plebeians being out of work? Slaves brought in from wars doing all the jobs
What was the Twelve Tables? A set of laws.
What complaints did the plebeians have against the patricians? They felt they were unfair and served only their own interests, the plebeians formed their own groups and refused to fight for Rome.
What lead to the fall of Rome? In fighting between the patricians and plebeians. Many generals formed their own armies and fought amongst themselves for power.
How did Ceasar rise to power? He was a great military leader who led the army in the conquering of Gaul. His army followed him back to Rome where he seized power.
How did Caesar die? Senators assassinated him.
What happened to Rome after Ceasar died? Civil war
Why did Romans want two Consuls? To require both to agree on any action, so actions would be well thought out.
Why did the Senate lead the opposition against Ceasar? He was taking powers that originally belong to the senate.
What is a census an official count of people living in a place
What is a villa? A country estate
What is a circus? An arena in ancient Rome or the show held there.
What is a gladiator? a person who fought to the death as entertainment for the Roman public.
How did a person claim roman citizenship? By registering for the census
Where many people in Rome wealthy? no
Why were fires a concern in Rome? Houses were packed together and made of wood.
What types of entertainment was provided in the arenas? circus? Clowns, animal fights, humans fighting humans
Why did the poor in Rome riot? Lack of wheat.
