Definitions: A

TermDefinition
Active voice The voice used to indicate that the grammatical subject of the verb is performing the action or causing the happening denoted by the verb; "`The boy threw the ball' uses the active voice"
Allegory A story in which the characters and events are symbols that stand for ideas about human life or for a political or historical situation
Alliteration The occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent or closely connected words.
Allusion An expression designed to call something to mind without mentioning it explicitly; an indirect or passing reference
Analogy A comparison between two things, typically on the basis of their structure and for the purpose of explanation or clarification
Antagonist A person who actively opposes or is hostile to someone or something; an adversary
Anti-climax A disappointing end to an exciting or impressive series of events
Anithesis Antithesis is used when two opposites are introduced in the same sentence, for contrasting effect
Apostrophe A punctuation mark ( ’ ) used to indicate either possession
Argumentative Essay Argumentative essays are most often used to address controversial issues
Anecdotal Evidence The expression anecdotal evidence refers to evidence from anecdotes
Archaic Language Language belonging to an earlier time and generally no longer used. Words or expressions that have passed out of use are archaic
Aside A remark that is not directly related to the main topic of discussion
Assonance in poetry, the repetition of the sound of a vowel or diphthong in nonrhyming stressed syllables near enough to each other for the echo to be discernible
Atmosphere The pervading tone or mood of a place, situation, or work of art
Audience The assembled spectators or listeners at a public event, such as a play, movie, concert, or meeting
Autobiography An account of a person's life written by that person
