Reading comprehension terms

TermDefinition
Author's purpose the reason why a text is written
Cause and Effect explains why one event causes another event to occur
Cause The reason something happen
Effect the result, or what happens because of the cause
Chronological Order Sequential order, time order
Comparing finding ways in which things are similar
Conclusion a final idea or judgment that you draw, or come to, after you have considered all of the evudence
Context clues help you figure out he meaning of an unfamiliar word
Contrasting finding ways in which things are different
Enumeration listing organizing information in a list in order of sixe, location, importance, etc.
Facts Statements that can be checked or proved
Facts and details Explain or support the main idea
generalization a broad statement that draws a conclusion based on lots of information
inference new knowledge that is gained by combining what one knows and what one reads
main idea identifies the topic and states the most important idea about it
narrative story
opinions statements that tell what someone thinks, feels or believes (personal belief)
prediction a way of using clues from a reading passage as well as things you already know to make a good guess about what might happen next
problem/solution states a problem andgives ways to resolve it
process explaining the procedures for how something is done
relevance details belong and are connected to the topic
sequence the order in which things are done or events happen
spatial order information is organized to show whre an item or items are located
summary a short statement that tells the main points or important ideas of a reading passage
