| caption | a title or brief explanation attached to an article illustration, cartoon, or poster |
| chapter | main division of a book, usually with a number or title |
| contribute | helping to achieve something |
| development | the establishment and reinforcement of the theme, setting or plot |
| footnote | an important piece of information printed at the bottom of the page |
| graphics | use of art and design or illustrations |
| header | text information such as title, date, page number at the top of the text, repeated on each page |
| paragraph | a group of sentences with a main idea and details |
| plot | the chain of events that tell a story |
| popular media | communication that influences and reaches people widely |
| scene | a sequence of continuous action in a play or movie |
| section | a distinct part into which text is divided |
| sentence | a set of words with a subject and predicate that convey a statement, question, exclamation, or command |
| setting | the place and time that an event takes place |
| stanza | a group of lines that form the metric unit of the poem; the “paragraph” of a poem |
| structure | how authors organize their ideas and the text |
| theme | the ideas the text explains, develops, and explores; what the text is really about |
