| author's purpose | why people write or speak: persuade, inform, express, or entertain |
| cite | when you quote or refer to a specific passage to support your idea |
| conclusion | an insight or understanding drawn from a group of details about their meaning or importance in the passage or text |
| example | a piece of information from the text that supports your thinking |
| evidence | facts, examples, data, quotations, opinions, interviews, or other sources which support a claim the writer makes |
| explain | to make clear to someone by describing in detail |
| explicitly | anything clearly stated in great or precise detail |
| infer | when you add what you’ve learned from the text to what you already know about the subject |
| response | a written answer |
| specific | clearly defined or identified |
| support | when you back up a claim about what the text says with evidence from the text |
