TermDefinition
Contextual Factors Mode, Field, Function and Tenor
Mode Type, or genre... Spoken/ Written/ Electronic
Multi-Model Fusion of Two modes... eg. Speech is n=both written and spoken
Field The topic or subect
Fuction The purpose or the aim of the text
Tenor The addresser and addressee relationship... and how status effects the relationship and the words used
Phatic Expressions Small talk...'Hey, how are you?'
Diectic Expression Sentences or information that is context bound... you can't understand it unless you know the contextual factors
Ellipses When there is missing information...
Ellision When there are missing sounds
Back channel behaviour Noises that the listener makes in response to the speaker to show listening
Subject Specific Lexis Words associated with a particular subject; such as football...'goal, ball, team, goal keeper, pitch'
Semantic Fields A group of words that are related by meaning but are not related to the main subject or topic
Jargon Terminology associated with a specific group of people, that people not from the group may not understand
Noun Thing, can be abstract, concrete and collective
Verb Moving word, can be dynamic or stative
Adverb Describes the verb... e.g. fastley moving
Adjective Describes the noun... e.g. sharp pencil
Pronouns Replace the noun to avoid repetition, You, we
Preposition The position of things
Conjunction Join to parts of the sentence
Determiners Including the articles
Discourse Markers Particular words used to mark boundaries... Right, lets move on

Modal Expressions Indicates attitude of the speaker

Homophones Word that sound the same but are spelt differently and mean different things... Plane and plain

Pitch Refers to the level of sound
