Literary Terms ; English I
| Term | Definition |

| setting | Where a story takes place. Including time of year,time of day, time in history. |
| MOOD | The atmosphere & how the story makes the reader feel. The mood is usually determined. |
| Theme/message | The lesson the author wants you the reader to learn. Many stories have many. |
| conflict | a problem |
| Internal conflict/ person vs self | a person must make a difficult decision |
| external conflict | a conflict that is created by an outside force |
| person vs person | a fight between 2 people or a argument between two people |
| person vs society | a person is in a conflict with an ideal believed by a group (racism) |
| person vs nature | a person is in conflict with any force of nature animals,weather, trapped in the ocean.. |
| person vs fate (destiny) | when a person is in conflict with his/her destiny |
| narrator | "person" telling the story |
| tone | how the narrator about the subject (tone in voice) |
| point of view | how a story is told. there is three answers |
| 1st person view | the narrator is part of the story 1, me,my, our |
| 3rd person limited point of view | the narrator tells the story from ONE character's point of view. The narrator does. |
| 3rd person ominsicent | the narrator can tell you about the past present, and future & can tell the story cha |
| characters | people or animals in the story |
| major characters | main/almost important characters in a story |
| protagonist | who the story is mainly about "good guy" |
| antagonist | the character that causes a problem for the protagonist "bad guy" |
| minor character | a character who is not as important in the story "supporting character" |
| dynamic character | a character who's attitude or beliefs change in the story |
| static character | a character who's attitude or beliefs change in the story |
| indirect characterization | a character's personality is determined by the way they act/treat others |
| direct characterization | a characters personality is told to the reader by the narrator |
| suspense | the quality that keeps the reader interested |
| symbol | something that stands or represents something else |
| irony | difference between appearance & reality |
| foreshadowing | hints that help the reader predict what will happen in the story |
