TermDefinition
Plot Plot is the series of related events that make up a story or drama
Conflict is the struggle or clash between opposing characters or forces. Conflict may be External-outside of self Internal- inside of self
Exposition opening of the story, characters and their conflicts are introduced, and a setting
Climax key scene in the story-the most tense, exciting, or terrifying moment, reveals the outcome
Resolution or Denouement final part of the story, the conflict is resolved
Timing and Placing chronological order
Flashback a scene that interrupts the present action of the plot to flash backwards and tell what happen at an earlier time, flashbacks can provide background information, strengthen our understanding of character
Flash-forward a scene that interrupts the present action of the plot to shift into the future. create dramatic irony.
Foreshadowing is the use of clues to hint at events that will occur later in the plot, can make a story more exciting by increasing suspense
Narrator Narrator is the person telling the story-controls everything you know about the characters and events
Point of view The vantage point from which the story is told. Three main point of view is Omniscient, First Person, Third Person Limited
Omniscient Point of view Is not a character, knows all the characters, can tell us everything about every character
First-Person Point Of View Is a character in the story, uses first person pronouns such as I and me, tells us only what he or she thinks and experiences. Sometimes can be called a "Persona"
Third-Person Point Of View Gives one characters thoughts and reactions, uses third person pronouns (He, She,They) tells little about other characters
Tone Tone is the attitude a speaker or writer tasks towards a subject, character, or audience. A story tone can be humorous, suspenseful, gloomy.
Voice Voice is the writer's distinctive use of language and his or her overall style. The writers tone and choice of words (diction) help create the voice.
