| Analogy | A point-by-point comparison made between two things to show how they are alike. |
| Argument | A position supported by evidence. |
| Bias | Leaning in favor of a certain thing against another. |
| Cause and Effect | When something happens (cause) and has a result (effect). |
| Chronological Order | The order in which events are put in sequence of when they occurred. |
| Compare-and-Contrast Pattern | Looking for similarities and differences. |
| Conclusions | General summing ups of information in a text. |
| Connotation and Denotation | The feelings (connotation) and definitions (denotation) associated with a word. |
| Context Clues | Words surrounding another word to hint at that other word's meaning. |
| Evidence | Claims, assertions, and other features from a text that can be used to answer questions about it. |
| Fact and Opinion | A statement that can be proved true and a personal belief that others may disagree with. |
| Fallacious Reasoning | False reasoning. |
| 5W-How | Lead paragraph answers who, what, when, where, why, and how. |
| Generalization | Broad statement covering several situations. |
| Graphic Features | Design elements like headings, maps, charts, graphs, and pictures. |
| Images | Descriptive writing to make someone picture a scene in their head. |
| Inference | An educated guess. |
| Instructional Manuals | Tell you how to operate a device. |
| KWL Chart | A chart showing what you know, what you want to know, and what you have learned. |
| Main Idea | The most important point or focus of a passage. |
| Newspapers | Informational texts that presents facts about current events. |
| Objective Writing | Sticks to the facts, does not reveal personal beliefs. |
| Outlining | Helps identify main ideas and understand informational texts. |
| Persuasion | Use of language or pictures to convince the reader to believe or do something. |
| Predictions | Guessing what will happen next. |
| Propaganda | Organized attempt to influence a large group of people. |
| Purposes of Text | To persuade, to inform, to entertain, etc. |
| Reading Rate | The speed at which you read a text. |
| Retelling | When you say what you remember from the text. |
| SQ3R | Survey, Question, Read, Retell, Review |
| Signs | Brief informational text, used to display information. |
| Stereotyping | Referring to all members of a group as if they were all the same. |
| Subjective Writing | Emphasizes and reveals personal feelings and opinions. |
| Summarizing | Restating the main ideas or major events in a text. |
| Text Structures | Cause and effect, chronological order, comparison and contrast. |
| Textbooks | Informational texts written to help students. |
| Writers Perspective | The way a person looks at a subject. |
