Astronomy Vocabulary

Alpha Centauri n. Alpha Centauri ; also known as Rigil Kent is the brightest star in the southern constellation of Centaurus, and the third brightest star in the night sky.
asteroid n. n. an object like a very large rock that goes around the sun like a planet. Scientists are hoping an _______ will clue them in about early life on earth.

geostationary orbit n. n. an orbit (= path travelled around an object in space) in which a satellite always remains over the same place on the Earth's surface because it moves at the same speed as the Earth turns
supernova n. n. › a star that has exploded, strongly increasing its brightness for a few months
meteor n. n. a piece of rock or other matter from space that produces a bright light as it travels through the Earth's atmosphere
nebula n. n. a cloud of gas or dust in space, appearing either bright or dark
alien n. n.coming from a different country, race, or group:
rocket n. n. a large cylinder-shaped object that moves very fast by forcing out burning gases, used for space travel or as a weapon: They launched a _____ to the planet Venus.
