Hotel vocab

TermDefinition
Amenities Small items such as shampoo, body wash, towels etc that the hotels provide in the room
Baggage/luggage Bags and suitcases packed with personal belongings
Connecting room/adjoining room Two hotel rooms with a door in between
Interconnecting room A hotel room that shares a wall with an adjoining room and is connected by a private door
Luggage cart A device on wheels for pushing luggage around
Bed and breakfast A home that offers a place to stay and a place to eat. Usually sell as the hotel package.
Bellboy/guest service A staff member who helps guests with their luggage
Booked Full, no vacancies
Full house 100% occupancy
Check in Go to front office/front desk/reception to receive keys
Check out Return keys and pay the bill
Complimentary Free of charge
Damage charge Money a guest owes for repairs to hotel property (e.g if a guest damages any facility of the hotel)
Deposit Amount paid ahead of time to secure a reservation
Double bed A bed large enough for two people
Twin bed Two bed (in a room)
Housekeeping/room attendant Staff members that clean the room
Kitchenette A small fridge and cooking area
Late charge A fee for staying past the check out time (usually 12PM)
Linen Sheets, blankets, pillow cases
Lobby Large open area at the front of the hotel
Parking pass A piece of paper that guests display in the car window while in the hotel parking lot
Pay-per-view-movie/paid movie Extra charge for movies and special television features
Room service Delivery of food or other services requested by guest (usually food and beverage, different from clean the room or make up the room)
Turn down services Usually done by the housekeeping after 6pm. For better sleeping conditions for the guest. E.g: close the curtain and pull out the sleepers
Sofa bed/pull-out couch A bed built into a sofa or couch
Suite A hotel room with an attached living room and/or kitchen
Rollaway bed A movable extra bed for extra guests to stay in a room
Valet parking Staff members who park guests’ vehicles
Vending machine A machine that distributes snacks and beverage when insert coins
Mini bar Usually a fridge or area that contains soft drinks and snacks for a fee
Wake up call/morning call A call from hotel that act as an alarm clock
Weight room/workout room/gym/fitness centre A room that guests can use for exercise and fitness (usually free of charge)
Blackout dates Certain dates that are not available for reservation
Back to back booking There’s more than one bookings during the guest staying period
Concierge A desk with staff where guest can ask for information, book outside restaurants and store luggage (usually located beside the front desk/front office/reception)
Do not disturb/DND A sign or an alarm that is placed outside the door. Means the guest does not want to be disturbed.
Extend stay Guests want to stay over for more than the nights that they booked
Free individual traveler/FIT/walk in guest A individual guest (usually book their reservation through internet, hotel reservation or hotel front office/front desk)
Full day charge Usually past 6pm of the check out date. Charge for one night of the daily rate
half day charge Usually after 12pm before 6pm of the check out date. Charge for 50% of the daily rate
Rack rate A hotel’s public rate of the day
BAR rate/best available rate The cheapest rate that a guest can get for the day
In suite dinning/in room dining Guests order rooms service to have food in room
Late check out A request from the guest to check out after regular check out time, usually after 12pm
Make up the room Clean the room
