| narrative writing | writing that tells a story |
| descriptive writing | writing that describes an object a person, a place experience, an emotion, etc. |
| expository writing | investigates and idea, evaluates evidence, expounds on the idea, and sets forth an argument |
| persuasive writing | writing used to convince the reader to see the writer's point of view |
| slant rhyme | rhyme created with words that are similar, but lack perfect correspondence - ex. grime/game |
| narrative poem | a poem that tells a story |
| epic poem | a long narrative poem that retells the heroic journey of a person or group of persons |
| dramatic poetry | poetry that tells a story and is meant to be recited - ex. Shakespeare's plays |
| lyric poetry | poetry that is song-like and emotional; does not tell a story but focuses on state of mind, emotions, and attitudes |
| tragic hero | a great or virtuous character in a dramatic tragedy who is destined for downfall |
| tragic flaw | the flaw that brings the protagonist of a tragedy to his/her downfall |
