Protagoinist the main character who solves the conflict
Antagonist the main character who causes the conflict
Allegory piece of literature tat has two levels of meaning
Flat character a character has only one main trait
Round character a character with varied personality traits
Allusion a reference to a historical or religious figure
Internal conflict a struggle that takes place within a character
External conflict a struggle outside of a character
Epithet a revealing nickname given to a character
Setting where and when a story occurs
Static character a character who stays the same in a story
Dynamic character character whose personality changes in the story
Tragedy a story which ends in death
Tragic hero personality flaw causes this character’s downfall
Tone the attitude the author puts into the story
Mood feeling of the audience towards a story
Foreshadowing a hint at what will occur later in the plot
Symbolism an object representing a larger idea
Foil two characters who highlight one another
Verbal irony saying the opposite of what is really meant
Dramatic irony the audience knows something a character does not
Situational irony an action is opposite of what is expected
Imagery using words that appeal to the five senses
Flashback recall of events from the past
Diction/style an author’s choice of words
Epiphany a sudden, inspirational idea
Exposition the introductory information in a story
Entanglement part of plot during which the conflict begins
Climax turning point of a story
Denouemnet falling action of a story
Resolution ending of a story
