| Setting | where and when a story occurs |
| Static character | a character who stays the same in a story |
| Dynamic character | character whose personality changes in the story |
| Tragedy | a story which ends in death |
| Tragic hero | personality flaw causes this character’s downfall |
| Tone | the attitude the author puts into the story |
| Mood | feeling of the audience towards a story |
| Foreshadowing | a hint at what will occur later in the plot |
| Symbolism | an object representing a larger idea |
| Foil | two characters who highlight one another |
| Verbal irony | saying the opposite of what is really meant |
| Dramatic irony | the audience knows something a character does not |
| Situational irony | an action is opposite of what is expected |
| Imagery | using words that appeal to the five senses |
