| actinide | An element in the second row of the rare earth elements of the periodic table. |
| alkaline earth metal | An element in the second family of the periodic table. |
| alkali metal | An element in the first family of the periodic table. They are the most reactive group of metals in the table. |
| alloy | A mixture of two or more metals. |
| conductor | A substance that transmits heat or electricity easily. |
| corrosion | The gradual wearing away of a metal due to a chemical reaction. |
| ductile | A term used to describe a material, usually a metal, that can be pulled or shaped into a wire. |
| lanthanide | An element in the first row of the rare earth elements of the periodic table. |
| magnetic | A characteristic of those metals that are attracted to magnets and can be made into magnets. |
| malleable | A term used to describe a material, usually a metal, that can be hammered or flattened into sheets. |
| reactivity | The ease or speed with which an element or compound combines with other elements or compounds. |
| transition metal | An element in families 3 through 12 of the periodic table. |
