Terms for Unit #4
| Term | Definition |

| Analyze | To examine carefully and in detail; to separate into parts |
| Cite | To quote a passage, book, or author |
| Compare | to examine (two or more objects, ideas, people, etc.) in order to note similarities and differences |
| Contrast | to compare in order to show unlikeness or differences; note the opposite natures, purposes, etc. |
| Infer | use my background knowledge and what the text says to draw a conclusion; “read between the lines” |
| Narrator | a person who gives an account or tells the story of events, experiences |
| Tension | mental or emotional strain; intense, suppressed suspense, anxiety, or excitement |
| Textual Evidence | Examples from the text used to support your position. Can be a quote or paraphrase. |
| Theme | The message, or lesson, that the author wants you to learn from the story. |
| Tone | The feeling a text has based on the words the author uses. Tone helps us understand the writer’s feelings towards a particular topic. |
| Point of View | The perspective the writer tells the story (1st, 2nd 3rd) |
| Narrative Techniques | The methods that writers use to give certain artistic and emotional effects to a story. Many key narrative techniques fall into four categories: plot, character, point of view, and style. |
