Rhetorical Devices

TermDefinition
Imagery Descriptive words that create a picture in the reader's mind- describes sight, sound, smell, touch (Simile, Metaphor are a specific type of this)
Metaphor Implied comparison between two unlike things
Dramatic Irony when the audience or reader knows something that the actors on stage on characters in the story don't know.
Irony The opposite of what you expect
Simile A comparison between two unlike things using 'like' or 'as'
Classical Allusion A passing reference to Greek or Roman history (myths etc)
Pun a word with a double meaning (a play on words)
Heroic Couplet ending sound of two lines rhyme (related to heroism)
Rhyming Couplet ending sound of two lines rhyme
Assonance Repeated vowel sound in a line of poetry
Alliteration Repeated consonant sound in a line of poetry
