Rhetorical Devices
| Term | Definition |

| Imagery | Descriptive words that create a picture in the reader's mind- describes sight, sound, smell, touch (Simile, Metaphor are a specific type of this) |
| Metaphor | Implied comparison between two unlike things |
| Dramatic Irony | when the audience or reader knows something that the actors on stage on characters in the story don't know. |
| Irony | The opposite of what you expect |
| Simile | A comparison between two unlike things using 'like' or 'as' |
| Classical Allusion | A passing reference to Greek or Roman history (myths etc) |
| Pun | a word with a double meaning (a play on words) |
| Heroic Couplet | ending sound of two lines rhyme (related to heroism) |
| Rhyming Couplet | ending sound of two lines rhyme |
| Assonance | Repeated vowel sound in a line of poetry |
| Alliteration | Repeated consonant sound in a line of poetry |
