Because of the permafrost what forms on the land in the summer? Explain why this happens? Shallow lakes and ponds form. They form because the water can't soak into the ground when the snow melts.
Name a decomposer in the tundra and tell what it does. fungi - breaks down dead plants or animals
What is the soil like in the tundra? squishy, mushy, soft, damp, thin, wet, poor
Why would large trees not be able to grow in the tundra? They have to shallow roots since they can't get through the permafrost.
Describe lichens. small, crusty, little things made of algae and fungi
Describe a lemming and what does it eat? a small creature that eats plants
Give 2 ways the arctic hare and arctic fox are alike. They both have thick hair and change color through seasons.
What predator hunts the musk oxen and how do they protect themselves? Polar bears hunt the mox oxen. The mox oxen protect themselves by circling around and pointing their sharp horns at the predator.
What 2 birds stay on the tundra all year? snowy owl and ptarmigan
Why do the caribou migrate to the tundra? to have birth and eat grass
What is the largest predator on the tundra and why is it dangerous? The polar bear is the largest predator and it is dangerous because it is very fast.
Why do the caribou go to the forest south of the tundra for winter? They are sheltered from the wind and can find food.
What 3 adaptions help the ptarmigan survive the winter? hair grows between toes, change the color of their feathers from brownish to white, their feathers fluff
Do lemmings hibernate? Explain. No, because then the foxes and owls can't eat.
Give 3 animals that stay on the tundra for the winter and have thick fur and fat to survive. 1) polar bear 2) musk oxen 3) foxes
Name 3 animals that people have caused their population to go down or decrease. 1) musk oxen 2) foxes 3) wolves
What are 2 programs that have helped these animals? 1) Protected Refugees Park - parks were created to protect endangered animals 2) close hunting season - created this allowing only certain months to hunt 2) Close hunting seasons were created
