pH & Indicators
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Ionic Product of Water | Kw = Kc[H2O] = [H+][OH-] |
Kw | [H+]{OH-] = 1.0x10^-14 |
pH | -log[H+] where the square brackets indicate concentration in moles per litre. |
pH at 25 degrees Celsius | The pH of an acidic solution is less than 7. The pH of an alkaline solution is less than 7. The pH of a neutral solution is equal to 7 |
Conjugate acids and bases | The stronger the acid, the weaker its conjugate base. The weaker an acid, the stronger its conjugate base. |
pH + pOH | pH + OH = 14 |
pOH | pOH = -log[OH-] |
