Linear Equations and Functions
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Slope | The rate of change of a line. |
| X - Intercept | an x-intercept is a point on the graph where y is zero |
| Y - Intercept | a y-intercept is a point on the graph where x is zero |
| Rate of change | A rate that describes how one quality changes into another |
| Unit rate | how many units of the first quality corresponds to one unit of the second type of quantity |
| Point Slope form | an equation of a straight line in the form y-y1 = m(x-x1)where m is the slope of the line and (x1, y1) are the coordinates of a given point on the line |
| Linear Equation | an equation of the first degree in any number of variables |
| Direct Variation | relationship between two variables that can be expressed by an equation in which one variable is equal to a constant times the other |
| Constant of proportionality | the constant value of the ratio of two proportional quantities x and y |
| Intersecting lines | The point where two lines meet or cross |
| Proportional relationship | Two quantities are proportional if they vary in such a way that one of them is a constant multiple of the other. |
| Slope - intercept form | the equation of a straight line in the form y = mx + b where m is the slope of the line and b is its y-intercept |
