elements of a short story

TermDefinition
Short Story A work of fiction that presents a sequence events, or plot that deals with a conflict. Also it is short.
Plot The sequence of related events that make up a story or novel. Also known as the storyline.
Climax The turning point or the high point of a story.
Rising action Major events that develop the plot of a story and lead to the climax
Conflict A struggle between opposing forces or opponent
External conflict A character struggles with an outside force such as another character or something.
Internal conflict The character struggles with his or her own needs, desires or emotions. Its from the within.
Falling action Events after the climax of a story but before the resolution. The people cheer.
Resolution The outcome of the conflict of a story when loose ends are wrapped up. Happy ending
Perspective The way a specific character views a situation or other characters.
Character A person or animal that takes part in the action of a literary.
Characterization The methods a writer uses to develop characters; for example, through description, actions and dialogue.
Point of view The perspective from which a story is told.
Dialogue Conversation between characters.
Inference A logical guess or conclusion based on observation, prior experience, or textual evidence.
Theme The central idea, message, or purpose of a literary work.
Exposition (1) A type of writing that explains, clarifies, defines or gives information; (2) Events that give a reader background information needed to understand a story.
Authors purpose An author purpose is the idea a writer intends to communicate to the reader. It could be to entertain, persuade or convince, or even teach. An author is one who originates an idea or concept through written literature.
