| Term | Definition |

| analyze | When you break something into its parts to understand how it works or what effect it has. |
| conclusion | An understanding drawn from a group of details about their meaning or importance in a passage. |
| evidence | Facts, examples, opinions, interviews, or other sources which support a claim the writer makes. |
| infer | When you add what you have learned from the text or what you already know about the subject. |
| specific | Clearly defined or identified. |
| support | When you back up a claim about what the text says with evidence from the text. |
| author's purpose | Why people write or speak: persuade, inform, express or entertain. |
| detail | These help to develop the central idea/main idea of a text. |
