| ba'raitah | rabbinic text as old as Mishnah but not included. Used as support of later rabbinic oppinions |
| seder | means order, section of mishnah |
| shas | abbreviation for Six Orders of the Mishnah/Talmud |
| gemara | means completation. comentary on mishnah. combine they are the Talmud. written in aramaic |
| talmud | mishnah+gemara, two versions- jerusalem and babylonian |
| amoraim | means to say,interpret, or explain. rabbis of the talmud |
| rashi | rabbi shlomo ben yitzchaki most famous commentator on bible and talmud written on the margins of the Talmud. he was a vitner 1000 years ago |
| tosafot | means additions rashi's students and descendants who added additional commentary to rashi's |

| amud | one side of the daf which is divided into a and b |
| masechet | volume of talmud |
| sugya | talmudic conversation |
| proof text | biblical text used to support a talmudic discussion |

| hillel | lenient rulings and usually followed |
| shammai | rulings were strict and litteral |
| rabban gamliel | leader of the assembly of rabbis |
