Exam Review Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Subject Refers to whom or what the senctence is about
Verb a word that descirbe action
Direct Object A word of phrase in a sentence referring to the person or thing receving the action of the transitive verb
Indirect Object tells whom or for whom the action of the verb is done and who is receving the Direct Object
Predicate Nominatives A noun or pronoun which follows the verb and descibes or renames the subject
Predicate Adjectives A tradtional term for an adjective that usually comes after a linking verb and not before a noun
Prepositional Phrase Begins with a preposition and ends with a noun or pronoun
Appostive Phrases Used to rename/explain/ or identify a noun or pronoun
Participial Phrases Verbs that are used as adjectives. Generally end in -ed or -ing
Nominative Absolutes A noun or pronoun followed by a participle or participial phrase
Gerund Phrases Is a form of a verb that acts as a noun. It ends in -ing and also may be described as an activity
Infinitive Phrases Phrase that begins with "to". And may act as a noun, adjective, or adverb.
Round a character who has a complex personality
Flat a character who has only one personality
Static a character who does not change over time
Dynamic a character that changes over time
Allusion An indirect reference in Literature to someone or something
Symbol is an object representing another to give it an entirely different meaning; much deeper and more significant
Tone is an attitude torward a subject or an audience
