DCE Chemistry Unit 5 Vocabulary

TermDefinition
coefficient a number written before the compound that tells you how many of that item are present; used to balance chemical equations
subscript a number written after an element symbol in a chemical formula that tells you how many of that element are in the molecule.
activity series a list of elements in order of decreasing activity, used to predict single displacement reactions
combustion a chemical reaction in which a hydrocarbon reacts with oxygen to form water and carbon dioxide
single displacement a chemical reaction in which an element reacts with a compound A + BC ->
double displacement a chemical reaction in which two compounds react, resulting in a switching of partners AB + CD ->
synthesis a chemical reaction in which two elements react to form a compound A + B ->
decomposition a chemical reaction in which a compound is broken down into simpler products AB ->
diatomic molecule a molecule consisting of two atoms: Br, I, N, Cl, H, O, F form diatomic molecules
balanced equation an equation in which the number and types of elements on the reactant side of the equation are equal to the number and types of elements on the products side of the reaction
reactant a substance that is present at the start of the reaction, written on the left side of the arrow in the reaction equation
product a substance that is formed during a chemical reaction, written on the right side of the arrow in the reaction equation
hydrocarbon a compound containing hydrogen and carbon
