Linear Equations and Functions
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| direct variation | mathematical relationship between two variables that can be expressed by an equation in which one variable is equal to a constant times the other |
| linear equation | an equation between two variables that gives a straight line when plotted on a graph. |
| point-slope form | Point slope form is also called as point - gradient form. Point Slope Form is used to generate the Equation of a straight line passing through a given point with a slope. |
| slope-intercept form | A linear equation is an algebraic equation in which each term is either a constant or the product of a constant and a single variable. |
| rate of change | The ratio of the change in the output value and change in the input value of a function |
| slope | a measure of the steepness of a line on a graph; the rise divided by the run |
| x-intercept | the x-coordinate of the point where the graph of a lime crosses the x-axis |
| y-intercept | the y-coordinate of the point where the graph of a line crosses the y-axis |
| unit rate | a rate in which the second quantity in the comparison is one unit. |
| proportional relationship | a relationship between inputs to outputs in which the ratio of inputs and outputs is always the same. |
| intersecting lines | lines that cross at exactly one point |
| constant of proportionality | a constant ratio of two variables related proportionally. |
