| accompany | to play along with; chord progressions may be used to accompany a melody |
| arpeggio | the notes of a chord are played sequentially, one after the other |
| block chord | the notes of a chord are played together |
| broken chord | the notes of a chord are played one at a time in any order |
| cadence | a series of intervals or chores that end a phrase, section, or piece of music |
| chord | three or more notes sounded together |
| homophonic | texture in which one main melody is accompanies by chords |
| major triad | the interval between the keynote of a major scale and the 2nd, 3rd, 6th, or 7th of that scale |
| modulation | the change from one key to another within a composition |
| primary triad | triad built on the 1st, 4th, or 5th note of the major scale; identified by capital Roman numerals; will always be major triads |
| relative minor | key signature that is the same as that of the relative major key |
| root | the note from which the chord gets its name |
| suspension | occurs when the harmony shifts from one chord to another and one or more tones from the first chord are temporarily held over into the second chord before they resolve |
| triad | a 3-note chord consisting of a root, a 3rd, and a 5th |
