alliteration the repetition of consonants in a line or phrase
conflict the problem in a story
climax the high point or turning point of a story
allusion a reference to another literature,song, movie... etc
metaphor a comparison of two unlike things without using like or as
plot the action or sequence of events in a story
setting when and where the story takes place
exposition an introduction of the main characters, settings, and conflicts of the plot
hyperbole an overstatement or exaggeration used for both serious and comic effects
onomatopoeia a word that is what it sounds like ex. cuckoo, MOO, Quack
protagonist the chief (main) character
antagonist the protagonist's rival or opponent
simile a comparison of two unlike things using like or as
personification giving nonhuman things human properties
resolution when a problem is solved; the final outcome of a story that ties up any loose ends
stereotyping when you think that one group of people is always going to be the exact same
idiom hitting it off ex. born with a silver spoon in your mouth
rhyme scheme the ordered pattern of rhymes at the ends of the lines of a poem or verse: AABB
point of view the angle from which a story is told
foreshadowing the author's use of hints,clues to suggest/set up that something is coming
flashback a break in the timeline to show actions that happened earlier
symbol an object, person, or event that stands for something else
mood the feeling a story gives a reader
dramatic irony the audience's or reader's knowledge of events or individuals surpasses that of the characters
indirect characterization a method of revealing information about the characters (STEAL)
dynamic character a character who undergoes some important change in a story
thematic topic the topic (word or phrase) upon which a theme is built
theme the author's message in a SENTENCE
