Chemical Bonding Vocabulary

Polar Covalent A kind of bond in which there is unequal sharing of electrons

Monatomic Ion an ion consisting of a single atom
pi bond A kind of bond formed by overlap of parallel orbitals
anion A negatively charged ion
ionic bond The electrostatic force that holds oppositely charged particles together
electronegativity the tendency of an atom in a compound to attract electrons
covalent bond a chemical bond that involves sharing a pair of electrons between atoms in a molecule
cation A positively charged ion
metallic bond the attraction of a metallic cation for delocalized electrons
sigma bond single covalent bonds
endothermic absorbing heat
chemical bond link between atoms resulting from the mutual attraction of their nuclei for electrons
