Literary Techniques

TermDefinition
Similie A comparison using the words "like" or "as"
Metaphor A comparison that does not use the words "like" or "as"
Personification A figure of speech which gives the qualities of a person to an animal, and object, or an idea.
Alliteration Repeated consonant sounds occuring at the beginnings of words or within words.
Onomatopoeia The use of words that mimic sounds
Hyperbole An exaggerated statement used to heighten effect.
Allusion A reference to a well known person, place, thing, or event.
Repetition The repeating of a word whose sound makes you think of its meaning.
Idiom Words used in a special way that may be different from their literal meaning.
Imagery Using language to produce a picture a picture in one's mind ( focusing on the five senses )
