Literary Techniques

| Similie | A comparison using the words "like" or "as" |
| Metaphor | A comparison that does not use the words "like" or "as" |
| Personification | A figure of speech which gives the qualities of a person to an animal, and object, or an idea. |
| Alliteration | Repeated consonant sounds occuring at the beginnings of words or within words. |
| Onomatopoeia | The use of words that mimic sounds |
| Hyperbole | An exaggerated statement used to heighten effect. |
| Allusion | A reference to a well known person, place, thing, or event. |
| Repetition | The repeating of a word whose sound makes you think of its meaning. |
| Idiom | Words used in a special way that may be different from their literal meaning. |
| Imagery | Using language to produce a picture a picture in one's mind ( focusing on the five senses ) |
