English terms for exam.

| Infinitive Phrase | to + simple verb.- Example- to smash a spider or to kick the ball past the goalie. |
| Prep Phrase | Example- From(prep) my(modifier) grandmother(noun). or Under(prep) the warm (modifiers) blanket(noun) |
| Participle Phrase | Starts with a past or present participle- Example- Crunching popcorn for the entire movies. or Washed with soap and water. |
| Adverb Clause | Starts with as, although, after, while, when, unless, because, before, if, or since. Example- How did Tommy scrub? Until his arms ached. or When did the cats bolt? Once they saw her car turn the corner. |
| Symbolism | The use of symbols to represent ideas or qualities. It could be that a flower represents love or death, ect. |
| Situational Irony | An occasion in which the outcome is Significantly different from what was expected or considered appropriate. Examples- A police officer gets arrested. A fire station burns down. A tow truck being towed. |
| Dramatic Irony | Occurs when the audience knows something the characters do not. Because of this understanding, the words of the characters take on a different meaning. Example- the character walks into a house and the audience knows the killer is in the house. |
| Tone | When the author is trying to portray a feeling. Example- a sad book would have a depressing tone. |
| Characterization | When the author describes and introduces characters. Can do this directly or indirectly. Direct characterization-"John was very tall." Indirect characterization- "As John walked into the room, he had to duck because he would have hit his head. |
| Setting | The setting of the story is the time, place and culture- the background against which the story takes place. |
| Satire | Is a style of writing which ridicules or criticizes its subject. Example- the movie Scary Movie or most political cartoons in newspapers and magazines |
