TermDefinition
Atom The basic unit of all matter
Element A substance that can not be broken down
Nucleus The center of an atom. It contains protons and electrons
Electron Shell a grouping of electrons surrounding the nucleus of an atom
Proton Particle of an atom that is in the nucleus and has a positive charge
Neutron Particle of an atom that is in the nucleus and gives no charge
Electron particle of an atom that si outside of the nucleus and gives a negative charge
Atomic Number Amount of atoms that are in an element
Atomic Mass The mass of a an atom
Valence Electrons The amount of the outermost electrons
Metal A solid material that is a good conductor,is ductile, and is malleable
Non-metal A material that is brittle/dull, a bad cunductor, and not solid
Metalloid A material that has the characteristics of both metals and non-metals
Group A collumn of elements on the periodic table that have the same number of valence electrons and have similar characteristics
Periods A collumn of elements on the periodic table that have the same number of electron shells
Transition Elements Any set of a metal element that is occupying a central block
Represenative Elements Elements that don't show valence variables
Ion An atom or a molecule with a net charge due to the loss or gain of one or more electrons
Isotope An element where the number of neutrons is decreased or increased
