is madame forestier the type of person who would have been cruel to mathilde about losing the necklace? no
how would you describe mr. loisel's character? he was economical and he was happy with his life
what two choices do the loisels have when they realize the necklace is permanently lost? tell madame forestier or replace it
mathilde has changed in many ways by the end of the story. In what ways has she changed? She is tired and old. She has been working hard for ten years trying to replace the diamond necklace. Now she has learned to be happy with what she has and does not ask for more.
It is obvious that mathilde is unhappy at the beginning of the story. Does her husband understand her happiness? no, he is happy with his life and doesn't understand why she isn't
at the end of the story we find out that the original necklace was made of phony diamonds. what do you think mathilde's reaction would have been had jeanne told her this fact when she borrowed the necklace? she would not have wanted it
when she loaned mathilde the necklace, why didn't madame forestier tell her friend that it wasn't valuable? because mathilde thought that it was beautiful, and madame forestier did not want to tell her it was fake, otherwise she would not have wanted it

when mr. and mrs. loisel are about to leave the jewelry store, the jeweler says, "you will have a lifetime to enjoy these diamonds." This statement is an example of irony. Explain the irony of this statement. Because they spent a lifetime of pain because of the necklace
what is the symbolic meaning of the paste necklace as it relates to mathilde at the beginning of the story? it symbolizes mathilde's old life, which she should have appeciated
When the true value of the necklace is revealed, it is obvious that madame forestier owes mathilde a lot of money. one could easily imagine madame giving mathilde the money. Mathilde could then afford many things. what is the irony of this? she had to go through so much because she wanted to be rich, and now she doesn't want that life anymore
what is the theme of "the necklace"? 1) be happy with what you have 2) better to tell the truth, than to protect your pride by lying
define the word envy a feeling of discontented or resentful longing aroused by someone else's possessions qualities, or luck
how was mathilde envious? she wanted to be rich like other people
why is it important to be truthful? it will get you further than lying. lies always catch up to you
how would mathilde's life have been different if she did tell the truth? she would not have worked for ten years to earn the money and she would not have ruined her life
what advantages does telling the truth have over telling a lie? the truth will not put you in a tough situation that you will have to get out of later
how would you define "being content with your life"? being grateful for what you already have
how would you define "being discontented with your life"? being unhappy with the things you have now
