Literary Elements

QuestionAnswer
What is suspense? A literary element the makes the reader feel uneasy and leaves them wanting more.
How is suspense achived Creating a mood, tone, setting, title, or by changing pace.
What is tone? The authors attitude.
What is mood? The way the reader feels.
How do you achieve mood? The authors tone, description of characters, setting, word choice.
What is Irony? Words that normally means one thing but are used to show the opposite. A situation where things turn out opposite of what you had hoped.
What are the three types of irony? Situational, Verbal, and Dramatic
What is situational irony? A situation where things turn out opposite of the expected
What is verbal irony? When characters say one thing and mean the opposite.
What is dramatic irony? When the readers know something the character(s) do not.
What are two methods for characterization? Direct, Indirect
What is direct characterization? The author tells us things about a character directly.
What is indirect characterization? The reader must infer these characteristics.
What are methods of direct characterization? The author/narrator tells us physical traits, personality traits.
What are methods of indirect characterization? Dialogue; dialect, word choice, the characters thoughts, actions
What is theme? The overall message of the story.
What are some clues to the theme? Title, conflict, setting, characters, repeated statements, repeated symbols
What is conflict? The struggle(s) that the protagonist faces.
What are the two types of characterization? Internal, External
What is person vs. self conflict? An internal conflict that involves a struggle of a character to make a choice.
What is person vs. nature conflict? An external conflict between a person and the elements of nature.
What is person vs. person conflict? An external conflict between a person and another person.
What is person vs. society conflict? An external conflict between a person and the rules, expectations of their society.
