Chapter 15 Geology

TermDefinition
Uniformitarianism The idea that Earth has been shaped by gradual changes though out history. Changes are still going on today. Proposed by James Hutton who wrote Theory of the Earth.
James Hutton The father of Geology. (study of the Earth)
Catastrophism A principle that states that geologic change occurs suddenly through events called Catastrophes. Ex: Volcano
Charles Lyell Wrote the principles of Geology that supported Hutton's ideas.
Actualism the modern explanation for Earth's history. Geologic changes have been gradual and rapid.
Paleontology the study of past life.
Paleontologists Scientists who study past life
Relative Dating Determining the age of objects or events in relation to other objects or events
Superposition Principle says that older rocks lie below younger rocks.
Geologic Column Ideal sequence of rock layers that contains all the known fossils and rock arranged old to young.
Fault Break in Earth's crust along which blocks of the crust slide relative to one another.
Folding occurs when rock layers bend and buckle from Earth's internal forces.
Tilting occurs when internal forces in the Earth slant rock layers.
Unconformity occurs when a layer or several layers of rock are missing from a rock sequence.
Nondepostion is the stoppage of deposition when a supply of sediment is cut off.
Disconformities found where part of a sequence of parallel rock layers is missing.
Angular Unconformity are found between horizontal layers of sedimentary rock and layers of rock that have been tilted or folded
Erison When is area is worn down by water, wind, or other elements, an unconformity is created
