| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Uniformitarianism | The idea that Earth has been shaped by gradual changes though out history. Changes are still going on today. Proposed by James Hutton who wrote Theory of the Earth. |
| James Hutton | The father of Geology. (study of the Earth) |
| Catastrophism | A principle that states that geologic change occurs suddenly through events called Catastrophes. Ex: Volcano |
| Charles Lyell | Wrote the principles of Geology that supported Hutton's ideas. |
| Actualism | the modern explanation for Earth's history. Geologic changes have been gradual and rapid. |
| Paleontology | the study of past life. |
| Paleontologists | Scientists who study past life |
| Relative Dating | Determining the age of objects or events in relation to other objects or events |
| Superposition | Principle says that older rocks lie below younger rocks. |
| Geologic Column | Ideal sequence of rock layers that contains all the known fossils and rock arranged old to young. |
| Fault | Break in Earth's crust along which blocks of the crust slide relative to one another. |
| Folding | occurs when rock layers bend and buckle from Earth's internal forces. |
| Tilting | occurs when internal forces in the Earth slant rock layers. |
| Unconformity | occurs when a layer or several layers of rock are missing from a rock sequence. |
| Nondepostion | is the stoppage of deposition when a supply of sediment is cut off. |
| Disconformities | found where part of a sequence of parallel rock layers is missing. |
| Angular Unconformity | are found between horizontal layers of sedimentary rock and layers of rock that have been tilted or folded |
| Erison | When is area is worn down by water, wind, or other elements, an unconformity is created |
