WWI Vocabulary Words

TermDefinition
Central Powers An alliance of Austria-Hungary, Germany, the Ottoman Empire, and Bulgaria during World War 1.
Allied Powers An alliance of Serbia, Russia, France, Great Britain, Italy, and seven other countries during World War 1.
Trenches A long, narrow excavation in the ground, the earth from which is thrown up in front to serve as a shelter from enemy fire or attack.
Submarine A warship that goes underwater and that fires torpedoes.
Propaganda An opinion expressed for the purpose of influencing the actions of others.
Treaty of Brest-Litovsk This gave large amounts of land away to Germany from Russia.
Nationalism Patriotic feeling, principles, or efforts.
Militarism The belief that a nation needs a large military force.
Imperialism The policy by which stronger nations extend over their economic, political, or military control over weaker territories.
Alliance A formal agreement or treaty between two or more nations to cooperate for specific reasons.
Fourteen Points President Woodrow Wilson's goal for peace after World War 1.
Zimmerman Note This was coded and promised that whenever America would join the war that Mexico would aid Germany in the war. America and Britain decoded this letter though.
The Sussex Pledge The Germans signed this saying that they will not sink merchant ships without warning of saving human lives.
U-Boat A German Submarine.
Treaty of Versailles The 1919 treaty that ended World War 1.
