Melton - Elements of Literature

TermDefinition
genre a category of literature (realistic fiction, fantasy, science fiction...)
protagonist the main character in a piece of literature
antagonist a character in conflict with the main character
motivation force driving the character's actions, thoughts, feelings, speech
dialogue the conversation between characters and indicated with quotation marks
dialect The speech of a particular area or group. When characters speak with an accent or non-standard English, you see words spelled differently or the use of apostrophes.
point of view who is telling the story...the main character or narrator?
setting the time and place of the story
mood overall feeling a writer is trying to create for the reader: sadness, joy, fear
infer/inference conclusion about a part of a story based on evidence from the text
plot what happens in a story
exposition the beginning of a story where the characters, setting and basic situation are introduced
cliffhanger suspenseful parts in a story designed to progress the action and make you want to keep reading
foreshadowing a clue or hint about events which will occur later in the story
flashback a scene in a story that shifts the setting from the present to the past
conflict the problem or struggle the main character faces
resolution how the character solves his/her problem - the solution
climax the highest point of action in the story, when the story's outcome hangs in the balance
theme the message about life or people the author is teaching the reader
irony the difference between what you expected to happen and what actually occurred
Author's purpose The author's main reason for writing--to persuade, to inform, to entertain (p.i.e.)
folktale A story passed down for generations through the oral tradition. It is about ordinary people, and its purpose was to teach the values of that culture.
myth a story that uses gods and heroes to explain natural phenomena
legend a story from the past originally based on real life heroes, people or kings
fairy tales A story that is meant to entertain. These always end happily and wishes come true through a test or struggle
