| Term | Definition |

| Alliteration | Words that repeat consonant sounds; "Fetched fresh, as I suppose, off some sweet wood." Hopkins, "In the Valley of the Elwy." |
| Assonance | Words that have similar vowel sounds, like alone, so, soon |
| Consonance | Words that end with the same consonants, like stir, queer, mirror |
| rhyme | Words that end with the same sound, like do, due and stew or clock, rock and Spock. |
| stanza | a paragraph in poetry |
| rhythm | the beat of a poem; the recurrence of accent or stress in lines of verse; |
| onomatopeoia | Words that sound like a sound, such as crack or buzz |
| simile | A figure of speech involving a comparison between unlike things using like, as, or as though. An example: "My love is like a red, red rose." |
