sound vocab in poetry

TermDefinition
Alliteration Words that repeat consonant sounds; "Fetched fresh, as I suppose, off some sweet wood." Hopkins, "In the Valley of the Elwy."
Assonance Words that have similar vowel sounds, like alone, so, soon
Consonance Words that end with the same consonants, like stir, queer, mirror
rhyme Words that end with the same sound, like do, due and stew or clock, rock and Spock.
stanza a paragraph in poetry
rhythm the beat of a poem; the recurrence of accent or stress in lines of verse;
onomatopeoia Words that sound like a sound, such as crack or buzz
simile A figure of speech involving a comparison between unlike things using like, as, or as though. An example: "My love is like a red, red rose."
